The first major solar power plant in Nigeria has been launched at the University of Ibadan. The solar plant became a reality as a result of a collaboration between the federal government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the German government and host institution.

With the capacity to supply 10 megawatts of renewable electricity, the plant will serve the university community and its environs upon completion.

The project is expected to be replicated  in three more Nigerian universities.

Serving multiple purposes, the power station will also be used as a training centre for engineering students and technicians from the university.

Represented by Anthony Anwuka, minister of state for education, president Muhammadu Buhari said the project was in line with the national energy policy of the federal government

“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony is a culmination of more than two years of negotiation involving UI, the Federal Government and German government. This is why the FG, through TETFund, has committed itself to this project with the provision of funds”, he said.
