The final investment decision has been made for the 28-MW pilot offshore wind project in northern Denmark that will use Siemens AG's 7-MW turbine, the German engineering group said today.

The project will be the first offshore installation of the company's SWT-7.0-154 wind turbine. In addition to its new turbine, Siemens will also supply innovative foundations and cable systems for the scheme. Turbine installation is scheduled for the summer of 2017, with commissioning expected in the third quarter of the same year.

Nissum Bredning Vindmolelaug and Jysk Energi won a tender from the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) for the 28-MW pilot earlier this year. The DEA believes that the elements to be tested at the Nissum Bredning Vind offshore wind power plant will result in significant savings in both capital and operating costs, Siemens said.

The project will feature Siemens' gravity jacket foundation concept, which the company says allows the construction of jacket foundations at lower costs than monopiles. The four turbines will be hooked to the grid using a new cable and turbine concept with a 66-kV voltage that Siemens expects to be the standard voltage for future offshore wind farms. Other innovations include cable in pipe solutions for simpler cables between turbines and a slender tower concept.
