LS Cable & System announced that it has developed ‘the movable trolly wire system for electric freight trains’ for the first time in the world. This could radically improve the efficiency of railroad logistics. The trolly wire system is routinely applied to railroad depots, but they are now being applied to freight trains for the first time. Recently LS Cable & System successfully completed pilot operations at Okcheon Station in Chungcheongbuk-do together with KORAIL.

The trolly wire is usually installed over the railway and supplies electricity to electric trains, thus the conventional fixed the trolly wire interferes with the unloading of freight containers. LS Cable & System improved on them, and moved the trolly wire outside of the railway so that railroad cars can be more freely loaded and unloaded.

The movable trolly wire system is expected to drastically improve the freight transportation system, and enhance the competitiveness of railroad logistics. As electric trains cost less to maintain and have 3 times more traction than diesel trains, the quantity of goods transported can be greatly increased. Until now electric trains have not been used often for transportation of freight because of the electric car lines.

“We made sure that the aluminum alloy material of the electric car lines can operate stably outdoors in spite of temperature changes, rain and wind,” said Dong-Wook Kim, CTO (Chief Technology Officer) of LS Cable & System. “We will work hard to penetrate overseas markets, mainly in Europe and Asia, where electric trains are widely used.”

LS Cable & System developed the movable trolly wire system over a two-year period from April 2015 as part of a subject of national policy for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, ‘Development of Movable Overhead Rigid Conductor System for Container Yard’. LS Cable & System transferred the technology to its vendor, Jaeyeong Tech, and developed them jointly with them for the sake of shared growth with SMEs.
